St Joseph's Catholic Church Stockport
St Joseph's parish has a rich history since the church was established in 1862
In the first half of the 19th Century Catholics in Stockport were once again free to practise their faith. In the early 1800s they celebrated Mass in a small chapel in Edgeley. In the midst of the influx of Irish immigrants and the Stockport riots of 1852 the Catholic Mission in Stockport was central to the lives of the Catholic community.
Fund raising for a church in the centre of the town was difficult because of so much poverty amongst its people. However, our church was built, despite the difficulties encountered. What faith those people had.
On 25 June 1862 the church of Saint Joseph was opened.
